Spacedays cinnamon roll

Groovy week – no overtime! Met a CEO (and his CEO designate), went to an event, and tidied up a lot!!

Friday night I went out to see Spacedays again. I invited the funkier office people to come with me, but none of them could be bothered (claiming excuses of “other plans”… right…). So after a dinner and a few beers with Arush (who really had other plans, good of him to come out), I went off to Home Club on Clark Quay to check out the bands. The setup this week was a bit different – two weeks ago it was a lineup of three rock bands, capped by Spacedays; this night it was three totally different bands. Jelly is this tattooed longhair with black glasses who nervously tucked his hair behind his ears while he manipulated a Mac Powerbook to play crazy hiphop, hardcore, and other sorts of electronic programmed music from the stage while his girlfriend took pictures of him. Nothing to watch there, so I listened to the tunes while playing Frog Hop on my iPhone.

Next up was Nicholas Chin (or Nick Chin? I was tempted to tell him the “my dad thought of it while shaving” joke from Top Secret, but it’s really not nice to make jokes about people’s names), who played acoustic folk songs while singing original songs (and one cover, I think it was a song from a local artist I didn’t recognise). His songs were really nice, even if the song titles were downers (“Our Love Has Grown So Cold”), his guitar playing nice, and his voice strong – he could move between a regular register and a falsetto easily, making me think of Elliott Smith (minus the killer guitar playing) or maybe Jeff Buckley. I’d have liked to have chatted with him, but didn’t spot him later on.

Spacedays were up last, and they were a lot tighter than last time I saw them, they put on a great set of cool funky guitar-driven music, with two strong vocalists (Mamat and Andy). Again, Mamat had some great wah action going there, he’s an excellent, effortless guitarist. For one song they brought out their friend, who had the cool duds on and sang confidently… but was rather off-key. I recorded three of their songs from the set, unfortunately the camera ran out of batter just before Mamat got into a solo. Too bad. Next time!

Hung out for a while outside with the band, met a Japanese guy scouting bands for Fuji Rock Fest (hey – Spacedays in Japan!!!). Rushed off to the MRT, got on the last train heading home so I saved myself the cost and aggravation of taking a cab from downtown. Still took one anyway from Clementi MRT station, but that was only $8.

Saturday morning we had a special treat for breakfast – freshly baked cinnamon rolls! They were simply awesome!!!! And if you don’t believe me, here’s a picture! After breakfast, Zen and I went to throw the ball around, then we jumped in the water and swam for a while, then went back home and Naoko and I played guitar while Zen studied. Great day!
