Zen also likes Space: 1999

Friday, August 6th, 2010

Today I worked from home. That means that I walked Zen to school at 7:15 AM, did some work in the morning, picked him up at 12:30, had a family lunch, and did some work in the afternoon. When I took my afternoon break, it was with Zen – we threw the softball around, and practiced soccer. Then we had a great dinner of Naoko’s superb hamburgers. In the evening we had a great laugh talking about “Fantastic Mister Fox”, then we played the monkey game, Uno, Black Peter, and the train game. We had major big laughs when we talked about which was our favourite scene from Fantastic Mister Fox (Naoko’s is the scene in Ash’s room with the train set, Zen’s is when Ash had his jacket tucked into his pants, and mine is when Bean throws a fit in his trailer and knocks everything onto the floor). Such great fun.

Zen and I are having a lot of fun these days watching episodes of Space: 1999, the old BBC TV series. At the time that it was filmed, 1975-1977, it was the most expensive TV series ever created, and in some ways it shows with the really great costumes, sets, and special effects. The stories are a bit ponderous, some of them are scary, all of them are mysterious, and the dialogue is terrible:

-To be haunted by your own host, even before you die-what’s that all about?
- Life and death – still the big questions, the greatest mysteries.

- Survivors of the Uranus (Your-anus) expedition of 1986.

- I am Jack, the commander of the Uranus (Your-anus) probe.

- Ah – supernatural, yes; paranormal… no!”

Zen loves the old stories, and isn’t turned off by the long passages that have lots of dialogue, which often deals with scientific concepts (or maybe pseudo-scientific concepts). Today we were watching “Alpha Child”, and I stopped it every now and then when I thought that he might not understand what was happening, and I explained it to him. At the end of the story, he said “wow, ‘Alpha Child’ was so interesting.” It really unleashed his imagination. He was still talking about it the next morning. The other day he watched one episode on his own, without me there to explain it to him. The series was filmed in 1976, 25 years before he was born, but he still likes it, which is quite a gap.

The series stars Martin Landau, who went on to critical acclaim in films by Francis Ford Coppola (Tucker: A Man And His Dream, where he got an Academy Award nomination), Tim Burton (Ed Wood – his portrayal of Bela Lugosi won him the Academy Award for best supporting actor) and Woody Allen (Crimes and Misdemeanors). Barbara Bain didn’t go on to that kind of fame, but she was looking pretty good in the series even though she was over 45 at the time. They were married from 1957 to 1993, 36 years (not bad for a Hollywood couple), and they were together in two colon:ized series (”Mission: Impossible” and “Space: 1999″).

Zen is quite interested in astronomy. Today we talked about the planets of the solar system, which ones have atmospheres and which ones don’t, which ones have a solid crust, and which ones blend the atmosphere with the mantle, and all sorts of groovy space stuff like that. It was really great fun. Recently we gave him a book on the universe and the solar system, it seems like he enjoys it a lot.

Here are a few photos of the series:

Friday was a very long day for me. I got up at 5:10 AM to prepare for a BBC spot. Left at 5:50, Naoko and Zen were already up but sleepy. I did BBC in the morning, talking about the stress tests on banks in Europe, and then I went to work. It was my last day working on Issue 99 of our magazine, and I wanted to get it done. Got lots of things done, the whole while listening to Neil Young’s “After The Gold Rush” on the iPhone; took a taxi home at 10:30 and it turns out I listened to the release 15 times through! I got home at 11:00, ate dinner, had some gin and tonics, stayed up until 1:00 watching old Space: 1999 episodes, hooray.

Saturday I was pooped so I tried to sleep in. Zen had to be up early for his fun day, so he came into my room, gave me a kiss, and then closed the door so that I could go back to sleep, so nice and loving. At about 10:20, my high school friend Margaret came with her husband Larry and he three cute little girls Katie, Emily and Ally. They participated in the Fun Day stuff, then we went to have some cold drinks, and played in the park, then they went off. It was a short visit, but very fun. After that, Naoko and Zen and I went to eat Indian food, yummy. We chilled out in the afternoon, they then went off to Codomo Club and I did computer stuff and work, just chilling out and wasting time. In the evening Zen and I watched an episode of Space: 1999 together, it seems like he likes it.

Sunday – Yuping is visiting from Taiwan, she came over in the morning, then we went off to the softball event. It was the last game of the season before summer break, so it was a day of “parent-child competition”, where the junior and senior team players, with their parents, were split into three teams, and we played a mini tournament. Naoko and Zen were on one a that one once and lost once, Zen was the catcher, and when he was at bat he got three hits (but was always out at first). I was on a team that lost twice. I was only at bat twice, but struck out each time (dads get a handicap rule – we start with two strikes). No action in the fielding aspect of it, but I had fun doing something out-of-doors for a change.

After that we went home, chilled out, went swimming (Zen and I), had a wonderful dinner with Yuping (see picture), played the monkey game and Uno poolside, looked at the full moon, chilled out chatting while I played guitar, and then went to sleep. I heard Zen speak Chinese a fair bit, it was so rewarding – all those years of Chinese are paying off, he really can use it to converse with people, and he understood some of Yuping’s stories, like her story about the kid who went to school without his school shoes – but wore slippers instead.

Monday we woke up to massive rains. Zen and Yuping and I left the house at the same time – Zen got dropped off at the school nearby and Yuping and I took the bus to go to the train line so that I could go to work and Yuping could go to the airport to catch a flight back to Taiwan. The buses were slow, of course, and were delighted to have a choice of three buses to chose from – the traffic had backed up the crowded front bus so that they were one after the other. We took the middle one, which proved to be the first to arrive at the train station (although it was kind of stinky). On the platform we saw train after train come in just crowded with people, barely any got off, so barely any could fit in. Then there was a message that the trains were going to be delayed 10 minutes. I saw that the situation would only get worse, so I squeezed in. Yuping opted to wait for a less crowded train (fat chance), so off I went.

Later I found out that Yuping had missed her flight, so we got to spend another night with her, nice. I got home early, we ate dinner, and then had a nice time playing games (monkey game and Uno again), and also playing guitar and chatting about stuff. Great fun.

Margaret, Larry, Katie, Emily and Ally came for a visit.

Bread ‘n’ Baseball

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Mmm mmm mmm… what a weekend.

On Friday I didn’t need to go to work – Visek Day, the Buddhist celebration of the life, death and enlightenment of the Buddha. After playing catch with Zen for a while and going for a swim, I chilled out at home all day reading RSS notes from various feeds I get, playing guitar, hanging around. Lovely. In the evening Zen and I watched The Castle of Cagliostro, a Lupin III adventure. It was fun and both of us enjoyed it. This was the version dubbed in English that a guy I went to high school with, David Hayter, does dubbing for (he’s Lupin).

Saturday morning Naoko baked up her first batch of muffins; she didn’t drown them in butter or sugar, so they ended up tasting more like scones, but that was all right with me. I did a lot of work all day, but we did go to see my colleague and her family and chill out at their gorgeous ground-level apartment with a garden out back.  Scrumptious.  While Naoko and Zen went to Codomo Club downtown, I went back to work, play guitar, drink beer.

Sunday was softball day, this time it was a tournament at Turf City.  Got up  at 5:40 AM, were in a cab by 7:15 all ready to play.  Zen was a catcher, and he was very excited about getting suited up and being a really great catcher.  He caught the pitcher’s throws well and threw them back to the pitcher well, but he didn’t have the confidence to get players out at home when there was an opportunity, there’s not that sort of teamwork yet with the kids. But that will all come. Zen was strong and reasonably confident throughout the whole game, we’re so proud of him for doing such a good job. He’s only had a bit of training, and I’m sure he’ll quickly become a very good catcher helping the team with lots of important plays.

I was an umpire for one of the games, and this was not much fun for me – besides standing out in the sun (and the rain – clouds formed and we had a short downpour, play was called off for a while until the rain passed), I also got hit right in the nuts by a stray softball when I wasn’t looking: the kids were practicing throwing the ball to each before the inning started and one of the balls made a beeline for my gonads instead of to the other kid’s glove – direct hit, OUCH!!!

But I was okay – it was only a softball after all, and it was a little seven year old who had thrown it, not Tiger Woods; unfortunately, the team lost two games, and we headed home just after noontime. A bit sad that the team lost, but in a way it was better for us – Naoko and Zen are on the redeye from Singapore to Osaka tonight (departure: 1:15 AM), and they didn’t want to spend all day out of doors.

Softball Sunday

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Great Sunday… sort of. I had set the alarm for 6:15 AM, and that is when I woke up – to do the work I couldn’t finish on Saturday night because the internet was slow and I just didn’t feel like working on a Saturday night… again! So… the solution was to skip sleeping in. I worked, ate another great breakfast of Naoko’s cinnamon rolls, and four hours later it was all done. Sheesh.

I had a nap, played guitar, did some more work, and then we went off to softball. Good stuff, today I had new athletic shorts that Naoko had bought for me on Saturday (one for softball, one for around the house). It was quickly soaked through with sweat. We had a great, fun practice – the team is really coming together, and the kids are getting good at softball – and I think I’m even improving my throwing and catching skills (I was certainly never a good player when I played t-ball and baseball when I was a kid, but now I’m catching on). Zen is practicing to be the catcher, and I think he’ll do a great job. The sky turned dark and gloomy, but it didn’t rain – we got our cab quickly, got home, I went to buy beer for dinner, then went for a very quick swim with Zen, and then it finally stated raining and got windy… it’s a cool evening.

Cool!

Happy Mother’s Day!!!

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

What a week – I did a BBC spot, met two CEOs (from two of the local Singapore banks), and interviewed the chairman of the biggest bank in India – whew!

Friday I got home and finished off a 2,000-word article (case study) for a book of contributed pieces on private equity, then went to sleep. Saturday I slept in somewhat, then went to throw the ball around a bit with Zen in the burning Singapore heat before jumping into the pool. Went for a haircut and ran some errands, then continued to do work at the computer throughout the rest of the day – stuff for the company, time-wasting stuff like Facebook, and a lot of YouTube listening. There was a huge downpour in the afternoon, and then when that ended Naoko and Zen went off to Codomo Club.

What a rainy day it was – check out this one minute clip!!

After the rain, Naoko and Zen went off to Codomo Club.

Sunday we woke up, and wished Naoko a happy Mother’s Day! Chilled out in the house, I got some work done, Zen did his homework, and then we had a great lunch. Went off to softball practice and had a great workout. It felt really good. Of course, I sweat a lot, but not too much. I weighed myself before and after, and this time I only lost 2.1 kilograms of liquid, not too bad.

Got home, went for a swim, and then ate Naoko’s amazing pizza. Check out the pic of it below. It was beautiful thin crust, very crispy. She used a whole can of olives for her and my part, and Zen had his with pineapple.

Right now Naoko is playing guitar and singing Spitz songs, she sounds great! She has only been learning a few weeks, but she already is doing very well. She could always sing very well, and now she can sing and strum, perfect!

Tonight we’re going to call Oma and Opa and wish Oma a happy Mother’s day.

Happy Mother’s Day, Oma, we love you and dad, and thanks for all you’ve done for us!

Great weekend

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Fun weekend.  Saturday we slept in and then I practiced throwing the ball with Zen, before he did some homework.  In the afternoon we headed off to Sentosa to hang around with friends drinking beer and eating pizza while the kids played, first on the water course, and then on the beach.  Check out the pics:

Today I practiced throwing the ball with Zen in the morning and in the afternoon I worked a lot, so I couldn’t go to Zen’s softball practice. Really a shame, because Zen was the star of the mini-competition that they had at the end of the practice: the kids played the moms (not enough dads around), and Zen got a grand slam, helping drive in four runs, which clinched the game for the kids: they won 13 to 10.

Softball weekends and the start of a new year!

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

Sunday, November 17, 2010 – today we got up at 5:30 so that we could prepare food and be at the baseball field at Turf City at 6:30 for a softball tournament for Zen’s team, The Coconuts junior division. Their first game was from 8:00 to 8:50. I was the third base umpire.  Since they allowed stealing, usually if a kid could get to first base, he or she could easily get to third base, and probably also score a point.  Unfortunately, though, Zen’s team was outgunned, and they got creamed.  But mostly everyone had a good time, and Zen was in good spirits.

I had to umpire another game, so it was 9:30 before I got to eat my breakfast. Zen’s team then had another game. This time they did much better, and the pitcher had many strikeouts. The team was ahead in the first inning; they were ahead in the second inning; we were all hopeful that they’d win, but everything fell apart in the third inning, and they lost a lot of runs.  But there was some interesting action – they got a kid out at third base, and another one out at home. So their pitching, batting, and fielding is all getting better.

We had a not-so-great bento for lunch and chilled out.  There was an “all-star game”, then I umpired another game, my final commitment for the tournament. After that we watched The Coconuts senior division play – they were ahead in points after the first half of the last inning, then in the second half the other team was at bat and they had to defend their lead; at first it was looking bad, as the team got a few runs, but then the kids got two out at third, and a final, daring attempt to get a kid out at home – they did it, they won!  It was very exciting. We got home at 3:00 after eight hours in the (mostly) baking sun. It felt good to feel the sun and wind on the face, and we made sure to get plenty of fluids and wear lots of sun protection, so we still feel great and not-so-pooped.  What a fun day!
Tonight we’re going to eat in and drink beer; I’ll do some work, and hopefully have time to watch the “Leonard Cohen Live At The Isle Of Wight 1970″ concert DVD.

Recent days – Saturday was a chillout day for me where I did some chores, some errands, and some work for the company; I also listened to a lot of Spitz and Leonard Cohen, reviewing them for the spot below.  Last week was an interesting one – I was off work still Monday and Tuesday, but not doing anything interesting, mostly resting to recover from my cold, doing chores, and reading; I also went to band practice on Monday.  Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, my first days in the office were okay, but not overly busy – I took off at 6:00 on Wednesday and Thursday. Thursday morning Oma and Opa went to Thailand for six days, they got a good deal on a nice hotel. Friday morning I talked on the BBC about banking events.

The first week of the year was not too eventful, but I did go to the launch of the new Rolls Royce, and had an informal meeting with a banker. Mostly it was spent nursing my cold.  Yuck.  I also had to solve a few problems: the CD and DVD drive on the computer went on the fritz and I had to take care of it.  Also, my internet and phone were down for 72 hours, which was really crap!  What a waste of time trying to solve that problem.  Then there was also the stuff I needed to do for my employment pass.  Errands, errands, errands, errands, errands, errands.

Naoko and Zen came back from Japan on January 3rd, I went to the airport to pick them up; unfortunately, Naoko had a terrible cold (which she quickly gave to me – I had it from January 5th until about January 15th), but we went home, reunited with Oma and Opa, had a nice dinner, and opened up presents.  Zen got a whole bunch of Tintin comics, a Millenium Falcon Lego set, a calendar, and a photo album of our photos from 2009. I got some Spitz CDs, the Leonard Cohen live at the Isle of Wight CD and DVD set, as well as the Big Star discography and rarities box set “Keep An Eye On The Sky.”  Great stuff.

Zen’s birthday weekend

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

We had a fun weekend. On Friday I came home late after finishing off the latest issue of our magazine and taking care of a few other things. I had a nice dinner with Naoko and Zen, and then we all went to sleep. Zen was super excited because it was his birthday the next day.

On Saturday Zen woke us up before eight o’clock. He was so excited, he had been talking about his birthday for about 10 months, and now it was finally here – his eighth birthday! Happy Birthday Zen!!!

First we opened up his birthday presents. He got three books from his mama and papa – the first was a storybook by Roald Dahl called Matilda, then there were two picture books – one about the human body, and one about the universe that teaches interesting things about the planets of our solar system. From his Oma and Opa he got two Transformer toys – Starscream, which transforms into a jet, and Grindor, which transforms into a helicopter. Then we went to his art class and then we went to his Kumon class, and then five of his school friends came over to have a birthday party. They played in our apartment for a long time with Zen’s toys, such as his train track, and then they went outside to kick a ball around. We found one interesting thing there – it was a large frog with a smaller frog on his back! We watched him hop around for a while, that was quite interesting. In the evening we hung around watching Ren and Stimpy on the DVD.

Today we went off to Zen’s softball match. His team played two other teams, but they weren’t so successful. The first team was very powerful, so Zen’s team didn’t have a chance. The second team was also good, but Zen’s team tried their best and played some good baseball.

Softball party

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

Today was a good day – we woke up near 9:00, then we had breakfast and did homework and work and tidying, and Naoko and Zen went to the art class. I stayed home and did work. Later we chilled out at home, and late in the afternoon we left for our appointment at the Japanese Association. It was an event for the kids’ softball league, but actually it was also an opportunity to get all of the kids and the families together and eat and have a fun time. Maybe other families have this opportunity quite often, but for me it was a first and rare opportunity and I had a great time. There was lots of food and lots of beer and great conversation. I was seated next to an interesting guy from Japan and a guy from the UK. The conversation was in English, although I also spoke Japanese a bit.

First there were drinks, then there was food, then speeches, then there were thank-yous from the kids and parents who were going. There were then speeches from the families who were joining the group, which included us. I said hi to the gang, and said that I was looking forward to the experience so that Zen could become a strong athlete. Then there was a paper scissors rock competition that I lost to one of my new friends (actually, Naoko lost to his wife, and Zen lost to his daughter too), but I made up for it by winning the arm wrestling competition. Yay!

Funny how one of the waiters looked like former prime minister of Japan Fukuda.

Got home late, did some work, Naoko and Zen went to sleep…
