One week

Monday, October 11th, 2004

Hey ho, another week gone by. Let’s see if I can remember what I did this week? I went to the library Monday to pick up DVDs, but only watched 2 of those thoughout the week – Grease, and a gre Twilight Zones episodes. Thursday Naoko asked me to come home on time so that we could go out for dinner, so we went to the little restaurant at the bottom of the hill and had a nice meal. It was yummy, and not expensive at all. Friday three of us went to a video conference with the head of retail of a bank, talked to the guy for several hours over the wires. It was interesting. I realized what a banking geek I had become when we were all laughing our heads off in the taxi on the way back over some banking thing or another – risk management, wealth centers, corporate governance, credit cards, all very funny stuff.

Saturday was a shopping day. We went downtown by bus, went to Isetan and shopped around a bit. Went to Agnes B. and I got a cardholder, a keychain, and a cool t-shirt – orange with a red star on it. The kind I’ve always wanted. Probably the most expensive t-shirt I have ever bought, but hopefully worth it. Again I was wearing my Superman t-shirt, Zen was wearing Spiderman. Spidey and Supey. Went and got groceries, then off to Holland Village to get more groceries and hang out with Ailing again. Waated to buy an orchid tree for $15, but when we got to the nice old shop it seems to be boarded up for renoavations. Probably expanding the Burger King. How do these people make so much money off of junk food, I’ll never know… Took the bus home Zen fell alseep, spent the afternoon sweeping and cleaning, then proof reading, very busy today. Went off to buy some beer. In the evening Dorai and Elena came over and we watche d Bush vs. Kerry debates on TV, that was kind of interesting. They left at 10, then I stayed up watching the rest of Zatoichi, the second debate retelecast, and then half of Stop Making Sense. Amazing. Sunday we woke up, had to take Zen on the train and the bus so after the usual morning stuff we went off to Clementi and then off downtown to see what StarHub is offering on its cell phones. Maybe we can get a deal, still haven’t decided yet. Had lunch in a lonely Japanese restaurant, then off back on the taxi again. Zen fell asleep in the bus, got home and did some proofreading, took a nap myself, did some computer, then the neighbours all came over for coffee and biscuits and chat. That was fun, and we had an impromptu plan to eat dinner together, which was nice. So we had Korean food, Japanese food prepared Singapore style by our Singaporean neighbours, and Chinese food prepared Japanese style by Naoko. The kids played happily, Zen ate a bit of his noodles, and we all had some laughs. Mum and Dad called at 9 and we chatted for a while. Got a call today also from Naoko’s mum, seems she will not be making it for a visit this year after all, what a pity.

Book review: Shakey, the authorized Neil Young biography. Innaresting bio of Neil Young and his mad, mad world. The sensitive screwball and the fantastic grungy songs. The CSNY circus, and the long long lazy afternoons of bong hits. Seems like a lot of marijuana and hashish was consumed by the Young camp. Weird. Long, fairly tedious, rarely insightful passages in Young’s words, possibly as a concession to Young’s demands, possibly a fawning move by the author, or some sort of need for the fans to know Neil’s actual words, but makes mostly for annoying filler. Couldn’t get to read the book to the end, but still got through 650 of the 750 pages. Am now reading the Dee Dee Ramone autobiography.

Hey, another Monday. I finally figured out how to upload pics onto the site tonight (secret – the computer creates small-size files automatically!! I just dug around a bit and found them. Try try and you will succeed). Today at work we had a long meeting. I was very early for it, so that was nice. Did a lot of work, then went off to the library again and borroweed Grease, the Twilight Zone original TV series disc 1, Chinese Ghost Story, and one more Zatoichi. Did a cool interview in the afternoon, then worked on an article and an interview transcript. Got home late, didn’t watch a movie, and started working on an article about Norman Bethune, the Canadian doctor in China.

Enjoy the pics. More to come.

Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday

Monday, October 4th, 2004

Wow, another weekend has gone by. Thursday was a very very very busy day at the office. I worked on two e-newsletter stories, they got sent out, I had an interview, then I worked on over 30 pages of laid out magazine, before taking a cab home after 10. Whew!! Watched another 20 minutes of the Producers, played some guitar, and went to sleep. Friday was my day off, so I went downtown with Naoko and Zen, then Zen and I went off to the Asian Civilizations Museum. We went to the one near Doby Ghaut, but the Ottoman exhibit we wanted to see was at the other one, so we had some roti prata for breakfast, then headed off. Nice walk between the two wings of the ACM, the Singapore River wing is near the Art House, which is a funky former courthouse and they are getting ready for some art festsival called “Insomnia.” 48 non-stop hours of art and activities, or something. The Ottoman show was nice, although it was a bit small. Nice Ottoman clothes, daggers, artwork, calligraphy, pots and pans, bowls and dishes, cups, chalices, things like that. Nice, fun stuff. Zen enjoyed it enough, then we went off to see the other rooms. Zen needed to use the toilet so we waited while some little kid used it. He took forever, flushing three times before he was finished his business. Mysterious. Went out to Raffles Place, felt weird to be there when others were at work. Took the train to Clementi, Zen whined and complained that he wanted to take the train more, so we got back on and went to Bukit Batok, then took the bus. Yeesh. He sure does love trains. He slept for a while, and I did some converting of video tapes into the computer. Gonna make some DVDs soon. Family videos, and concert videos. Should be cool. He woke up and we went on a bicycle ride to the children’s library near here, we have never been. It is OK – nice and air-conditioned and some OK books. Had a nice dinner, with beer, and watched Zatoichi 4 – very good, this one. Saturday we woke up early, did lots of cleaning and laundry, then went off to Jurong Point to do some shopping. Lots of wandering around the sunny inside of this nice little mall on the western fringe of Singapore. I hoped to find some good, comfortable t-shirts, since the ones I have are pretty crumby already. Didn’t find anything after a lot of looking around, but I did buy some DVD-Rs, and also a pillow for the seat. Jeez, boring stuff. Went home, did some dinking around on the computer while Zen slept, then… Drove off to do some shopping by bike, saw lots of stupidity on the roads – parking, bad design, terrible timing, etc. I forgot what we did in the evening. Watched the Fearless Vampire Killers and finished the Producers. Cool. Sunday we hung out, went grocery shopping, I wrote an article on blood for a teen magazine, and then we had dinner. My Philipina neighbour showed me pictures of a woman baring her breasts that she had in her cell phone. Weird.

Things Zen Does: Zen seems to like Nagisa Nite and Belle and Sebastian songs more now. He also constantly says “I like Lion Dance. I like drums.” I guess we have to take him to see lion dancing at every opportunity. I took him cycling yesterday, he could go up quite a steep hill for a long ways. Bravo, Zen. His legs seem really long, somehow. Recently, every time he wakes up from a nap he cries “I want to take the traaaaaain.” Funny kid.
