The human body

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Evan’s so interested in his unit of inquiry at school. This unit is called the Human Body and they learn about parts of the body etc. He’s so interested in it, he’ll sit down and draw pictures of the human body and label parts etc. Grandma sent a parcel with some cool human body books and he’s already gotten into them.

Here are some of his pictures, with some captions below to interpret what he’s written.

The body - outline drawn by me

“The nerves. The brain thinks of something to say. ”

“Then the brain sends the message to your nerves.”

At the bottom Evan writes:

“Full veins”

“Empty veins”

Here’s another drawing:

The ribcage
“The ribcage: The ribcage protects the lungs and the heart”.

Final body picture for today

Hard to read what he writes here, but there’s Kidneys, Veins and “More veins” at the bottom. :)

Mammogram

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

Evan’s unit of inquiry now is the human body so he’s often talking about veins, bones etc.

Nicole had a mammogram done recently (routine check) and Evan said he wanted to share the X-rays with his class. He told his teacher that he was going to bring in his Mummy’s boob x-ray.

Japanese

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Evan’s Japanese is really improving now – I think he’s having more lessons in school now. The other day he asked me ask him what is name is and he replied “ぼくの名前はエヴァンです” (my name is Evan). He said it very smoothly and correctly too, which is amazing. He’s still trying to learn Japanese from the flashcards we do, but I don’t think it’s sinking in very much. Nevertheless, it’s great progress!

First grade

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Evan started first grade last week. His teacher is an Australian and seems quite good. Evan’s usually had female teachers, and once he had a male teacher for a while and he seemed to relate better to him. So we’re hoping he will relate to his new teacher well.
