Evan had a busy day today – he wrode to the grocery store twice on his tricycle! I was surprised that he even made it once, but we went a second time to fetch some beer and icecream! We surprised Nicole on the first trip, since she wasn’t expecting us to follow her. Evan’s very good about going down hills, and asks for my hand whenever it gets steep. He’s also very wary of cars, which is a good thing. He usually freaks out a bit whenever a car comes towards us.

Evan’s favourite thing from today was the pump at the waterfall. He really likes pumps. We went to a farm day a while ago and they had a number of pumps from a local pioneer mechanics club and he still talks about them.

No more day-sleeps

Friday, January 14th, 2005

Evan’s definately stopped his day-sleeps these days. Although today when we put him time-out in his room, we thought it was awefully quiet, so we checked and he was asleep on his bed! We let him sleep for about 1/2 hour and then woke him. He tried really hard to get back to sleep for the next 30 minutes or so, but we managed to keep him awake.

Baby pieces

Wednesday, January 12th, 2005

Nicole and the family were going for a walk and they went past some construction worker working on a building, and they had sledgehammers and were breaking rocks into small pieces.

Nicole asked Evan what they are doing and he said “Breaking rocks into baby pieces”.

At the beach

Sunday, January 9th, 2005

We went to Maraetai beach today, which was very nice. We were up pretty early (our little man woke up at 6:30) so we were at the beach by 10am or so. There were few people around, so we had our pick of spots.

Lauren slept in the car (she hadn’t had a sleep yet today) and Evan and I cruised around and played in the sand. Then we had some food and I got out the kite from Aaron and Raveena (a frog kite with cool streamers) and flew that for a bit. Then Evan and I decided to go for a swim. The water was cool and murky and the bottom wasn’t very nice, but it was good to go in. Evan kept tasting the water – I guess he likes the saltiness of it. At one stage, I think he bent down and drank some of it. Yuck!

They have a peer out at Maraetai and Evan and I explored it for a bit. He almost slipped on the wet wood leading to the water, but luckily I had his hand. We then went about looking for barbeques, which by then were starting to come out of the woodwork. Evan still is maniacal for barbeques. Usually the first things he says when he wakes in the morning is “Turn barbeque on?”.

We left at around 1pm with quite a bit of sun on us and pleasant memories of the beach.

Cameron’s birthday party

Saturday, January 8th, 2005

Evan went to his second birthday party in as many days today. Yesterday was Marvin’s birthday and today was Cameron’s. Cameron’s party was at a play centre in Whitford, a few minutes drive from here. It’s very much countryside out that way and Evan had a great time at the very nice centre. There was lots to do, apart from eating the yummy food Cameron’s parents had prepared. They had a great activity centre there with slides and ladders and even a play lorry to jump around on.

They also had a big sand pit where Evan played very well. He only threw sand once, and that was after big Aiden threw sand at him a couple of times. I pulled him aside and he understood very well that he’s not supposed to do that and indeed, he didn’t do it any more.

We bought Evan some paint today, so that he can use his easel to paint on. He still makes a mess of things, but he’s got a nice creative streak to him. He hasn’t figured out how to not mix the colours together in the paint pots, but that’s ok. The paint’s water-solvent, so we can simply wash it away. Good thing, since he’s already gotten the patio coloured!

Mid-day sleeps gone for good

Wednesday, January 5th, 2005

Well it seems Evan definately doesn’t want mid-day sleeps any more. We still put him up for a nap, but he never sleeps and invariably comes downstairs. But for that, he’s in bed early and never stays up late. He sometimes sleeps in later, sometimes as late as 8:15! Nice.

Mayo, Deo

Tuesday, January 4th, 2005

Evan loves saying “Mayo, Deo” over and over. Not sure how he came up with that!
